Spring 2018 | Renovation Work Begins
As we both worked during the weekdays,
we could only come to the house
on weekends or after work in the evenings.

We began by clearing out the house—
disposing of the trash and belongings
left behind by the previous owner.

In addition to dismantling the lean-to extension,
we also had to organize not only the main house
but the kura (storehouse) and the barn as well.

With only weekends and evenings available,
the days stretched on with no clear end in sight,
and our anxiety gradually began to grow.
Would we really be able to bring this place
to a state where we could welcome guests?
Would it truly take shape at all?
At the time (before COVID),
there were still very few accommodations
that offered an entire house as a private rental,
and hardly any examples we could refer to.
Back then, the mainstream path for individuals
starting their own lodging business
was to open a guesthouse.
But the experiences we had gained
through our travels naturally led us
toward a different style.

Fragments of the places we had stayed
during our travels abroad—
the sense of exclusivity
and the comfort we felt
when spending time in an entire house,
welcoming only one group per day.
As we gathered those memories,
the shape of the place
we had envisioned
slowly began to emerge.

There were not many people
who truly understood what we were trying to do.
Even so,
we decided to name the place “nagare.”
It was also the name of the place
in Guatemala
where we had stayed the longest
during our 500-day journey around the world.
The moment we chose the name,
this house—still far from complete—
felt as though
it had finally gained
a personality of its own.
